Today is a special day. One, because it’s Valentine’s Day - a day solely dedicated to love. Chocolate candy and roses aside, I think it’s important to take some time and celebrate the thing that makes the world go ‘round. But secondly, it’s because I’ve finally put the finishing touches on my new boudoir website and I’m so excited to share it with you. If you’re a guy, feel free to share this post and the website link with your wife or fiancé. However, please respect the fact that the website was designed for women’s eyes only.

I talk a lot throughout the website about not only why I think a boudoir shoot is something every woman should consider doing, but also why I love shooting it. So I’ll let you read it for yourself here and here. Just know that for me, I shoot boudoir for two reasons: I love what boudoir does for women. I also love what it does for their marriages. I just started reading the book Fight Like a Girl: The Power of Being a Woman by Lisa Bevere. I’m barely two chapters in, but one thing that Lisa said really resonated with me; I felt like it summed up exactly what my heart’s been saying throughout this whole process.

“I long for the day when [women] will begin to…restore the unique splendor, love and beauty that only the expression of the feminine brings…I want to help women capture the beauty and strength of their life seasons. No matter what our present season or perspective, this cannot happen until we first learn to love one another and who we are as women.”

Wow. I feel like you just had a quick peek into the depths of my soul. Makes me feel a little…um, exposed. :)

So, without making you wait any longer, I give you Unlocked Boudoir. Take a look around and let me know what you think. I had an opportunity to shoot with best friends Ian Laskowski and Marissa Mulder on our recent trip to New York City. Not only are they beautiful people, but they are unbelievably sweet and genuine. We started early in the morning on the Brooklyn Bridge and then headed over to the South Street Seaport, two of my favorite places in the city. I loved every minute shooting with them - even if it was incredibly chilly outside. Thank you both for braving the cold. I'm just head-over-heels in love with this session!

I've tried to be patient. Really, I have. The fact that I'm about to share something with you that I've been working on for almost a year is a testament to that. Isn't it? I think that's pretty good considering that I'm the kind of girl that skips to the end of a murder mystery novel just to see who really did it and then goes back to reading the book. Just can't help myself. Anyone close to me knows just how important this project has been and is to me. Once the website is up and running, I'll share a little bit more with you about that and the plans I have for this "sister" business of Kimberly Barnes Photography. So the bad news is that you'll have to wait just a little bit longer. The good news? My lack of restraint means that you get a little taste of things to come:

Since several of you have asked, I am currently booking boudoir sessions and it's not too late to book something for Valentine's Day.

I shot Kaci and Brad's wedding with Jenny Lindsey at the Turtle Point Yacht and Country Club down in Alabama. It was a gorgeous day and the lakeside setting was the perfect location for an afternoon wedding. Kaci planned a truly elegant affair with many details including a string quartet, handmade signs, candy buffet and an antique car to whisk the couple away. The Bawcum family invited me out to their property not too long ago - the land where they will some day soon have their new home. Life with the Bawcums is certainly never dull, evident by their easy camaraderie and constant laughter. I just love this family! Stacey + Jimmy | Thompson's Station Wedding Photographer

I shot Stacey and Jimmy's wedding at an estate in Thompson's Station with Jenny Lindsey. It had just about every element that I absolutely love about weddings: a couple oh-so-in-love, crisp fall weather, a gorgeous outdoor location and every detail planned perfectly, right down to the bride's lovely red shoes.

Stacey and Jimmy both support the arts, so this played a huge role in their wedding day. Several of their musically-talented friends participated in the ceremony, including an incredible acoustic guitar duo and a men's a cappella choir. Jimmy is also a part of a men's quartet, so he couldn't let the day go by without serenading his bride. Add in a personalized set of beautifully-worded wedding vows and there wasn't a dry eye in sight.

But most of all, I loved Stacey and Jimmy's evident faith, intricately woven throughout their entire day. They even chose to forgo traditional favors and make a donation to World Vision in honor of their guests.

There's no question that there's an incredible future ahead for Stacey and Jimmy. I'm just so blessed I was able to share some of these special moments with them.

Samantha | Spring Hill Franklin Senior Photographer

When I first met Samantha, I instantly knew I was going to love this girl. So I wasn't surprised when the two of us had a blast during her senior photo session. We shot around both Franklin and Spring Hill and dug through about half of Samantha's fabulous wardrobe. Not only is Samantha a gorgeous girl, but it's clear that this is a girl who is completely comfortable in knowing exactly who she is and what she wants out of life. I'm so excited to see what the future holds for Miss Samantha. Thanks for letting me be a part of your senior year!

Mike + Leslie | Nashville Engagement Photographer

If you've been following me for a while, you might recognize these two lovebirds, since they've graced the blog before. But now, Mike and Leslie are engaged, six months away from their their wedding day, and growing more in love with each other every minute. There's something incredibly special about Leslie and her Mike, as she calls him. If you've ever spent a moment with them, you know exactly what I'm talking about. You can hear it in their laughter together; see it in their smiles - that theirs is a love built on a solid foundation. A rare treasure indeed.

When Mike proposed, he gave Leslie a copy of her favorite book and wrote one of her favorite quotes from it on the inside. Anyone who's ever loved Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre could probably recite this from memory:

I offer you my hand, my heart, and a share of all my possessions.

I ask you to pass through life at my side - to be my second self, and best earthly companion.

My bride is here, because my equal is here, and my likeness...

Courtney and Robb's July wedding that I shot with the awesome Jenny Lindsey was the perfect balance of fun and tradition; from Courtney's "something blue" Converse shoes to their traditional Catholic wedding at the Nashville Cathedral of the Incarnation to their rockin' reception at the Cannery Ballroom - complete with an 80's cover band. Hannah and Emma are quite possibly two of the sweetest girls ever. Having known them now for a while, it's hard to believe that they're both seniors this year at Page High School. There are so many great photos from their session, so I picked just a few of my favorites to share.

Hannah's in soccer and Smiles 4 Kids this year. She plans on going to UTK in the fall and wants to pursue pediatric nursing.

Emma is also in Smiles 4 Kids this year - it's a really great community service organization. She plans on either going to UTK or WKU to study either early education or business.

And of course, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to get photos of these gorgeous ladies together - perfect for those graduation announcements in the Spring.

Love you girls and I'm so glad I could be a part of your senior year!

John and Tina's wedding couldn't have gone more beautifully. Downtown Charlotte, Tenn., was the perfect backdrop for the couple's intimate ceremony and reception with a handful of their closest friends and family. When I first sat down with John and Tina to talk about their wedding day, they couldn't say enough about how important their family was to them. Nearly every detail of their wedding was wrapped up in remembering John's mother and celebrating the fact that Tina's mother was able to be present at the wedding. I get emotional just thinking about the all the special moments Tina shared with her mom on her special day.

Remember this incredibly cute couple? Doug and Lauren tied the knot in July at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Jackson, Tenn. It was the perfect blend of lovely tradition, the couple's laid-back and fun style and the bride's quiet grace.

The celebration continued to the reception at the STAR Center where everyone danced the night away. The highlight? When Lauren and her bridesmaids taught everyone how to "Dougie".

Nashville 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb | Nashville Event Photographer

It was hard to miss the fact that this past Sunday marked the 10 year anniversary of 9/11. For me, as the opening ceremonies began for the 2nd Annual Nashville 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at the William R. Snodgrass Tennessee Tower, it brought back mixed emotions. Sadness and grief, remembering what we lost - who we lost - that fateful day; and pride, that on this day in 2011, my husband and his fellow firefighters would finish a climb that the fallen 343 started 10 years ago. 343 firefighters that put on their turnout gear and got on their trucks knowing that they probably wouldn't be coming back. Yet they climbed anyway. And so our own heroes honored their fallen FDNY brothers and sisters in one of the most significant ways possible.

343 firefighters, each one carrying a photo, name and ranking of a single firefighter lost in the Twin Towers, climbing in full gear for 110 flights - the same distance the FDNY firefighters would have climbed that day, had they reached the top.

All participants this year, grouped in companies of seven and most dressed in full gear, climbed the stairwells of the Tennessee Tower four times, passing photos taped to the wall of the very individuals they were climbing for. As each flight got more difficult to climb, they pushed each other on with shouts of encouragement. Some even carried the gear that another could no longer bear. It was a true testament to the bond firefighters have with one another.

After emerging from the elevator on their final descent, the firefighters - tired, sweaty and sore - reached down for the photos they carried one last time, and announced to their friends and family the name of the firefighter they climbed for before ringing the final bell.

It's an event like no other, full of emotion and camaraderie. It makes me proud to be a part of something that honors heroes in such a unique way. Thank you Josh and Jessica for allowing me to play a part in such day of honor and remembrance.

Nashville 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb Sneak Peek| Nashville Event Photographer

Those of you who have been following me on Facebook know that this weekend has been exceptionally busy for me, with an all-day shoot on Friday, wedding on Saturday and the Nashville 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb that took place this morning. I have well over a thousand photos to sort through from this morning's event, but I just couldn't let the day go by without sharing just a few with you. The official blog post will hopefully go up later this week, but let me just say that I am so proud of my husband and the 342 other firefighters that participated today in Nashville to honor their brothers and sisters who lost their lives 10 years ago.

Chase + Maria, pt. 2 | Franklin Wedding Photographer

As promised, here's part two of Chase and Maria's gorgeous backyard wedding that I shot with Jenny Lindsey. If you missed part one, you can find it here.

Maria was one incredibly sunning bride and her dress fit her to a "T".

Her eight (yes, eight) gorgeous bridesmaids had purple strapless dresses and each carried a single flower - a perfect combination for a summer wedding.

The entire bridal party was so much fun, helping Chase and Maria relax and enjoy the moments leading up to their wedding.

Now for the gushy stuff. I'm a complete romantic at heart, which is probably why I love shooting weddings so much. However, I can usually keep my emotions in check while I'm working. This time? Not so much. The moment the music started playing and the first bridesmaid turned the corner, you could just feel the presence of love and anticipation from everyone there.

Seeing Chase's face as he watched his bride come down the aisle was enough to get the tears flowing for just about everyone there. His was a look of honesty. Of joy. And of pure love.

Then, add in the wedding service itself, as the pastor spoke about Chase and Maria's history as a couple, their faith and resounding love for Christ, and the many ways the two of them have blessed the lives of everyone around them - both individually and as a couple. There wasn't a dry eye in sight.

Chase and Maria had their first dance as husband and wife as the sun was setting.

Maria's dance with her father was incredibly touching. Partway through, they asked all the other fathers there to join them on the dance floor with their own daughters. Chase's dance with his mom ended in the same fashion.

Then it was on to the celebration! Maria, Chase and their guests danced the night away. I can't imagine a more perfect ending to such a joyful day!

I promised you a wedding on the blog this week, so I'm making good on my word. Sort of. I shot Chase and Maria's intimate backyard wedding with Jenny Lindsey and I have to say that it's been one of my favorite weddings this summer. There were so many details and personal touches with this wedding, that I can't put it all in one post. So I'm breaking it up into two. Ready for part one?

Chase and Maria's wedding was held on an extremely hot Saturday in June at Maria's parents home in Franklin. Maria's parents took the money that they planned on spending on the wedding venue and used it to redo their entire backyard. Not only was it the perfect setting for their daughter's wedding, but now they'll have a lasting memory of this perfect day. You'll see more of the backyard in part two.

Maria made one truly gorgeous bride. She was completely relaxed and laid back all morning, laughing and spending time with her eight (yes, eight) bridesmaids.

There was even time for a special father daughter moment as she was getting ready.

The details were endless for this wedding. Everything was so thought out, from the blessing tree to the fan programs, all the way to the yummy cupcakes awaiting the guests at the reception. Chase and Maria really thought about every single detail and the results were beautiful.

So what's up in part two? Well a gorgeous bridal party for starters. Then Chase and Maria's touching ceremony. And perhaps even a teary-eyed groom. I can't wait to share the rest of these photos with you.

Amy + Pete | Nashville Christ Church Wedding Photographer

This wedding season has been such a incredible blessing that I am just now getting Amy and Pete's elegant affair up on the blog. This is another wedding that I shot with Jenny Lindsey, this time at Christ Church in Nashville. Not only was Christ Church the perfect backdrop for Amy and Pete's special day, but it has also played an important role in Amy's life. Amy's parents got married at Christ Church 25 years ago and her older sister married there 10 years ago. Throughout the years, the people at Christ Church has loved on this family so much that there was no question to where Amy and Pete's wedding would be held.

Amy and Pete decided to do a first look before the wedding. This is not only a great choice time-wise, but there's nothing better than capturing a few quiet, intimate moments between a bride and groom before friends and family rush in to celebrate the day with the couple. Amy and Pete's first look was no exception.

The wedding cake was absolutely stunning, but the groom's cake was really what caught everyone's attention. Pete's mom made him a fish cake out of...wait for it....rice krispies. You can't even tell, can you? She did such a good job.

There was a photobooth set up at the reception, which is always so much fun.

Lily | Spring Hill Baby Photographer

Born Easter weekend, Lily is the precious little daughter of Joel and Rachel. It's hard to believe she's four months old already! I've been able to spend a lot of time with Lily since she's been born, but this time I went with camera-in-hand. A July thunderstorm kept us inside for the shoot, but we were able to catch some great window light in their sunroom. Lily was the perfect little model - we couldn't have asked for anything more. So adorable!

We've waited a long time for these little boys to arrive. From the moment Emily announced her pregnancy, to the discovery that she was having twins, all the way to their miraculous birth story...every step of the way has been an incredible blessing to Jason and Emily. Now that Andrew and Nolan are finally here, I can't imagine two sweeter baby boys being given to two such deserving parents.

The first time I photographed Graham was during Nick and Julie's maternity session and it's been so fun watching him grow over the past year. What a sweet little boy he's turned out to be! We recently got together for a quick one-year session and I love how everything turned out.

Nick and Julie picked up this awesome chair for Graham's birthday from Pottery Barn Kids. Isn't it just so adorable? I love the colors Julie picked out and Graham has a blast climbing all over it.

The Radio Flyer below was another birthday gift for Graham. We took it outside for a test run in the backyard.

Erika and Corey | Jamaica Destination Wedding Photographer

As many of you know, I had an incredible opportunity to shoot a wedding while I was in Jamaica in May. Erika and Corey's beautiful, intimate wedding was held at the Iberostar Rose Hall Suites Hotel in Montego Bay. The weather was absolutely perfect for their sunset ceremony and every detail was completely taken care of by the resort staff.

The evening was one filled with so much joy and emotion. Through tears and laughter, Erika and Corey stood before their closest friends and family and said their vows to one another. And once they were pronounced husband and wife, the celebration instantly began. Two people, most certainly in love, and one of the world's most romantic locations. It really doesn't get any better than this.

Andrea + Scott | Franklin Tennessee Wedding Photographer

Back in May, I had the opportunity to shoot another wedding with Jenny Lindsey, this time in historic downtown Franklin at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The rain clouds on Andrea and Scott's wedding day couldn't dampen the love and excitement that surrounded this group. As the girls got ready, it was clear that each of Andrea's eight bridesmaids had played an important role in her life and they were now so incredibly happy for their friend.

In fact, these girls went in together to get Andrea a gift she'd never forget. Something that not only fulfilled her "something blue" for the day, but also something she'd been dreaming about for years. Yes, that's right. A pair of Manolo Blahnik flats, a version of the gorgeous blue shoes Carrie Bradshaw wore for her wedding to Mr. Big in the first Sex and the City movie. The shoe box held personal notes from each woman and the amount of love and thoughtfulness of the gift brought tears to Andrea's eyes.

The tears continued to flow as Andrea's maid of honor presented her with a letter from Scott.

Andrea and Scott decided to have a first look before the wedding. This gave them a few moments together before we took photos of the whole wedding party.

Then it was off to The Factory to dance the night away.

What a beautiful day!

I'd like you to meet Hannah and Emma. Twin sisters by birth, friends by choice. Both incredibly unique in personality and style, but equally as sweet. I just love these girls so much! Lucky for me, Hannah and Emma are two of my senior reps for the Class of 2012. I'm so excited to be working with them.

Five Years Later | Personal

On June 17th, 2006, I put on a sparkly white dress and said goodbye to my single years, pledging my life and my love to my very best friend. Five incredible years later, we've been through one adventure after another, through heartache and loss, through life's blessings and joys - and I couldn't imagine having shared these experiences with anyone else. Happy Anniversary, my sweet husband. Here's to many, many more years to come!

Lindsay + Kyle | Jamaica Couples Photographer

One of the things I absolutely loved about our resort in Jamaica was that it was small enough for us to meet and get to know several great couples while we were there including Lindsay and Kyle, who were honeymooning after their May 14 wedding. And after a week in paradise, we thought - what better way to end a fabulously romantic vacation than with a photo shoot?

Lindsay and Kyle were all for getting up with the sun their final morning in Jamaica and let me tell you...this is why I'm always trying to talk people into sunrise photo shoots. The light, for one, is gorgeous. But that's nothing compared to the calmness that comes with the break of dawn. Besides an occasional rain drop, hinting at the storms to come later in the day, the three of us had this quiet beach all to ourselves. Well, and the occasional peacock.

I couldn't have wished for anything better. A perfect end to the perfect trip. A gorgeous couple, oh so in love with each other, willing to let this photographer capture some intimate moments between the two of them. Oh, and by the way...Lindsay and Kyle? You two make getting up at 5:30 in the morning look good.

Reagan and Justin's wedding was held on a chilly April day at Union Station here in Nashville. Union Station used to be this elaborate railroad terminal back when Nashville still had passenger trains. Today, it's a world-class hotel full of historic character. And the perfect backdrop for a wedding.

Reagan and Justin are truly one of the sweetest couples ever. Their brief wedding ceremony was full of class and elegance. Afterwards, we convinced the couple to brave the wind outside to grab a few photos.

I just love the emotion behind Reagan's dance with her father. It had pretty much everyone in tears.

Before the night was over, we had Reagan and Justin head down to the first floor to get these last images. They're probably some of my favorites - a perfect way to end a perfect night!

I photographed this little peanut back in August and I just can't believe how big she's gotten! Colleen turned one in December and now she's well on her way to being an independent little lady. Yes, that means lots of personality and attitude, but still as sweet as can be.

It's a tradition that on the last morning of every trip to Wisconsin, several of us girls get together for one final breakfast. This time, Jill and I decided to do a short mini-session with Colleen beforehand to mark how much she's grown in the past few months. The chilly day brought forth pigtails, adorable jacket and a trip to the park. Oh, what fun!

This is the last of the sessions from my Wisconsin trip in April. I'm crossing my fingers for another trip up there sometime soon. Details to come!

Jamie and I just got back from Jamaica this week and I'm sitting here trying to figure out where to start. I've got digital piles of all your photos waiting to be edited and blogged and I know I'm a little behind. Thanks so much for your patience while I've been in paradise. While I'm catching up on everything, I wanted to take a break from blogging to post something for my fellow photographers.

One of the things I love most about being a photographer in Nashville is the fantastic photography community that exists here. Perhaps it's due to the fact that there's so many of us, we can't help but find some common ground that extends beyond the viewfinder. Or maybe it's because of that good ol' southern hospitality that makes everyone so friendly. Whatever the reason, I've found that the people that make up this local community of photographers have quickly become mentors, collaborators and friends.

In January, an online version of this community emerged. Photographers Redefined has quickly grown from our own little community of photographers to include those throughout the country and around the globe. Trust me - this is one resource that is well worth your time to be a part of. It's a place to give and receive input on your art and business. To find referrals and second shooters. It's a place to grow and connect. It even has a section to discuss all things non-photography-related, including a "confessions" post. As in, yes, I once had a massive crush on Taylor Hanson. Who didn't?

So if you're a photographer - just starting out or well-seasoned; Nikon or Canon; Widows or Mac; shooting portraits, weddings or anything in between - I encourage you to check out Photographers Redefined. You won't be disappointed.

I met Julz several years ago as I was preparing for my final year working with some awesome young women - who will be juniors in college next year - before the big move to Nashville. Julz provided the perfect balance to our small group and it was reassuring to know that I was leaving my youth group girls with an incredible mentor and an awesome friend.

Now, Julz and her husband Steve are the proud parents of my favorite 3-year-old twin girls, Gabrielle and Evangeline. I got to spend a whole afternoon with these little munchkins as they danced around the living room and played with Mommy's makeup brushes. Elle and Evie never cease to amaze me as their distinct personalities blossom. They're so sweet to each other and you can't help but feel joyful around them.

The morning rain stopped just long enough for us to head outside in matching Hello, Kitty gear. Them, not me. Playtime is just that much more fun when you're wearing pink. It's true.

Then it was time for a little popcorn, The Princess and the Frog and some Easter egg decorating. Yes, I agree. What a perfect way to spend the day.

Sweet Katie. As I sat across the table from my friend after her mini-session, I couldn't help but notice how animated she was as she told me about her plans for the future, her dreams; her voice filled with excitement and her heart overflowing with passion. Katie and I have been friends for years, brought together by a love for all things music, but it was easy to see that something was different about her.

This past year or so in Katie's life has been spent on self-discovery, building confidence and falling in love. Discovering who she is and who she wants to be. Finding assurance in her growing talent. Loving every moment opera has played in her life. And it shows. There are some incredible opportunities and changes happening in Katie's life right now. There's no doubt that big things are in store for this pretty girl.

Meet Miss Adelyn. She's got the sweetest smile and the cutest little mohawk. I had a chance to photograph Ady and her parents, Alyssa and Joel, on my latest trip up to Wisconsin a couple of weeks ago. One of the things I miss most about living there is all the people I love so dearly, especially since everyone's off getting married and having babies. You know, the important stuff.

It's been almost four months since Ady's newborn photos arrived in my inbox. My, how she's grown. This time, I got to see her in person. To hold her. Make silly faces at her. Fall in love with her. I couldn't believe how laid back she was. She seemed to love being in front of the camera - she even gave me one of her signature pouts before she was all smiles again.

Whenever I can tear my eyes away from the adorable baby I'm photographing, I sincerely enjoy watching the parents. To hear Lyss talk about how much joy a tiny baby has brought to her life or the fulfillment she gets from being blessed enough to be a stay-at-home mom...to see Joel as a proud father, ready to protect his little girl, but at the same time, gentle and doting...this is what it's all about. Being honored enough to share in peoples' best moments. Understanding who they are. How they live. How they love.

Joel and Lyss, you have yourselves an incredible baby girl. She is so blessed to have you as parents and many aunts, uncles and grandparents around to spoil her!

There's something amazing - captivating, really - about pregnancy. How a tiny life just transforms into a perfect little baby. The gentle flutter of a heartbeat on the ultrasound screen. The slight kicks as the baby moves around. The ever-present glow a mom has when she's expecting.

I've been blessed to watch Joel and Rachel as they've embarked on a new stage in life. As they've experienced the excitement and joy that comes with a new baby on the way. Knowing that they're going to be wonderful parents and that their little girl is so incredibly loved.

Lauren + Adam | Nashville Engagement Photographer

This was a moment I've been waiting over a year for. From the first day Lauren sat down in the office chair across from mine, twirled around and said, "I met someone." It didn't take long for both Lauren and Adam to realize this was it. Falling head over heels, Lauren has been excitedly awaiting the day they made their engagement official. Patiently waiting, I should add.

Adam wanted his proposal to be something incredible special. So he went back to the very first moment he met Lauren - dancing at Otter Creek Church of Christ. It's a place where they've spent countless hours getting to know each other, dancing the night away. And on this April night, Adam took the microphone, got down on one knee and asked, with over a hundred witnesses watching, if the woman he loved would spend the rest of her life by his side.

Then came the gasp. The tears. And the resounding "YES!"

It was a moment unlike any other and a true blessing to be a part of. To one of my very best friends who deserves the best this world can give and every moment of joy, congratulations. Adam, you've got yourself one amazing woman.

Doug knew Lauren was the one after only dating for about a month. It's something he kept to himself for a while until she realized it too, but there was no doubt that Lauren's smile and sweet spirit had completely won him over. Lauren and Doug grew up in the same town, but didn't meet until years later when they were both working at the same restaurant in Murfreesboro. One thing led to another and the two of them found themselves heading on a journey to happily ever after.

I absolutely loved the morning I spent with Lauren and Doug shooting their engagement photos. For me, it was a time to really understand what makes them, well, them. To be honored enough to be let into the world of two people in love and to just watch them be is a true blessing. And as for Lauren and Doug, as with all my e-sessions, I really hope it's a time for them to remember why they fell in love with each other and share their anticipation for what the future holds.

Our day started out in historic Downtown Franklin. A quiet Tuesday morning meant less crowds and an occasional little old lady oohing and aahing over such a cute couple.

We then headed over to one of Lauren and Doug's favorite places, Arrington Vineyards. If you've never been to this magical place, you must go. Wine tastings are always free and their raspberry wine, paired with chocolate truffles, is truly some of the best stuff on earth. These truffles also make for fantastic ring shots.

Lauren and Doug, you two are so adorable together. I can't wait to shoot your wedding in July!

Kendra | Chicago Portrait Photographer

There were four of us. Part of the notorious "'K' Group" in a certain 2nd grade Sunday school class. Kendra, Kim, Kirstin and Krista. With a few honorary members whose names started with other, less k-like, letters of the alphabet. We were the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants from a small Wisconsin town...well, without the pants. Friends who overcame the silent treatment of elementary school and teenage drama to remain in each others' lives, despite the challenges of change and distance.

So when my husband announced he would be heading out of town with some of the guys, I jumped at the opportunity to reconnect. Kendra moved to Chicago a couple of years ago and she just thrives on the fast-paced city life and all that it has to offer. And for a weekend, we slipped back into the comfortableness of our friendship, as if time and distance had never even existed.

Kendra's always had a strong gift for teaching. She now uses her talent as a Zumba instructor and personal trainer. While in Chicago, I had my first Zumba experience and I can tell you - I now get what all the hype is about. Maybe it's taking a class from someone who knows exactly what she's doing - who you can tell loves every second she's in front of a class - or who's so attentive that she knows who needs the extra push to work a little bit harder or who needs the extra help (me!) to get it right. Whatever it is, it's clear to anyone who steps foot into Kendra's often overflowing classes that this girl is so hard not to love and is completely in her element.

Kendra made the mistake of mentioning that she wanted headshots at some point. That desire turned into a two-day event in Kendra's neighborhood and around Chicago. In my defense, I say that it was not due to my shutter-happy self, but because of the windy city's freezing temperatures. Oh, yes. And wind. How ironic. Regardless, I find the results absolutely stunning, because I find Kendra as beautiful on the outside as she is on the inside. Here's the proof:

Some people are destined to be lifelong friends. It's just a matter of fact. So, Kendra, you're stuck with me, whether you like it or not.

Contessa + Avern | Nashville Couples Photographer

I had only spoken with Contessa over the phone before I met her and her fiancé, Avern, for their engagement shoot, but I could already tell that I was going to love this couple. I wasn't disappointed. They were so much fun. I think it's great when two people not only love each other but can laugh together. And these two do both beautifully. There were several times when I think they forgot I was even there, lost in a moment with each other. I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Real.

Contessa and Avern met while going to TSU, so it was only fitting that we stopped there to get some photos and relive some of their dating past. The two of them spent many hours sitting on their favorite bench, getting to know each other and falling in love.

Layla | Spring Hill Newborn Photographer

At nine days old, little Layla was a complete joy to photograph. I felt like I could just sit and watch her for hours. I mean, really. Who wouldn't want to stare into those big blue eyes all day long? And every little tiny feature, perfectly designed and formed...you can't help but realize what a complete miracle a baby truly is.

Lexi's a first-time mommy and she's doing so well at it. Even before Layla was born, Lexi was busy getting her nursery painted and put together. Everything is so bright and colorful - perfect for a little girl who is so well loved. Oh, and Lexi looks AMAZING for having just had a baby.

I just love this little face.

It's easy to see how Layla has claimed the hearts of everyone she meets. She certainly has mine.

Today is a special day for me. Because every year on this day, I get to celebrate the life of a woman who's taught me to be strong, independent and caring. She's showed me how to serve others unconditionally and what it looks like to live out your marriage vows, faithfully and completely. She's been more than I could ever ask for and all that I could ever hope to be.

Proposals in general are awesome. Public surprise proposals are event better. Public surprise proposals in front of 15 or so photographers are the best. thing. ever. This weekend I had the opportunity to attend the "Not a Workshop" Workshop put together by fellow Nashville photographer Joshua Gull. I probably won't get through all the images until after I get back from Chicago, but I wanted to post a sneak peek for Andy and Kayla. Andy planned to propose to his girlfriend (now fiancée), Kayla, while they were posing for the cameras. Not only did she say yes (yay!), but it was probably one of the most photographed proposals in history. I love it. Congrats, you two!

Nolen | Spring Hill Newborn Photographer

My world has seemed full of pregnant bellies and newborns lately. I've decided I like it that way. Newborns, especially, are some of my favorite people to photograph. What better way to spend an afternoon than gazing into the eyes of a tiny baby, delighting in the newness of it all? Match that with some ridiculous natural light and you get something completely awe-inspiring.

Sweet Nolen is the third little baby for friend and fellow photographer Jamie Wright. She and I spent a couple of afternoons together having Nolen model in front of the camera. Better get used to it, bud. That's what you get for having a mom who's a photographer.

Don't you just love this face?!

Even big brother Carter and big sister Lila joined in on the action. They are so excited to have a little brother around and it really shows. I just can't get over how gentle they are with Nolen.

These really are precious moments and I love being able to be a part of it all. Congratulations Jamie, Dayne, Carter and Lila!

I've been trying to catch up on my blogging lately, amidst deadlines and traveling, so you may see more than one post today before I leave for my Chicago trip.

Back in January, I had the honor of being asked to participate in the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Nashville's Extraordinary Evening at The Palm fundraiser. I was so excited because not only is there a special place in my heart for non-profit organizations in general, but because I've seen first-hand how RMHC provides for families in need. How often do we hear of children getting medical treatment far from their homes because parents want to give their children the best modern medicine possible? Sometimes as far as across the entire country. And RMHC gives families a gift greater than almost anything else - togetherness. So that together they can face the illness instead of worrying about finding a place to stay or preparing family meals.

So for an evening, patrons of RMHC Nashville came together to celebrate the organization's hard work and financially show their support. The folks at The Palm did an incredible job with the catering and service, with Kristine Mylls and her jazz combo providing the music.

This winter in Nashville has been inconveniently uncooperative. I've missed basking in the sunshine and being free of wearing layers upon layers to stay warm. Says the girl from Wisconsin. That's why at the first hint of a nice day in February, I convinced my friend Leslie to get outside with me for some headshots. And we weren't disappointed.

Some of the things I love about Leslie are her absolute joy and fun-loving personality. I think we were able to get a glimpse of that in these photos, which is probably why I like them so much.

Laura Joy | Franklin Portrait Photography

There are just some people you meet and you instantly know that your life will never be the same. Laura Joy and I met at the airport before we embarked on one of the greatest adventures of our lives. Almost six years ago now (and I can't believe it's been that long ago already), she and I traveled with a number of other Belmont students to Spain for six months. In the 8-hour plane ride to Madrid, Laura Joy and I discovered just how much we had in common, right down to the annoyingly unique bumps on our noses.

So for six weeks, we traveled together, discovered new foods together, stepped back into history together, shopped together, cried together - even lived in the same flat together. With our awesome host mother - a cute little old lady with pink hair. Seriously. Upon returning to the States, we decided that we didn't want to lose the friendship we'd made.

Here she is, one of my dearest friends:

Laura Joy is a fabulous teacher, fiercely dedicated to her students. She's also a model (uh, can you tell?) and owns her own business, Building Perceptions, that offers things like media production, Web design and computer repair (PC-only, which makes Mac people like myself very, very sad).

So going along with her passion for videography and modeling, it's no surprise that LJ has a closet full of costumes. The gloves in the photos above got her a gig in Lady Antebellum's music video for "Lookin' for a Good Time". (Front and center in the crowd). And the 60's dress in the photos below? Owned, worn and preserved by Joy Palma, LJ's equally-as-beautiful mother. My mom got rid of anything this cool, including those knee-high boots that she would never have let me leave the house wearing.

I should mention that the butterfly ring LJ's wearing in the photo above is one of the many souvenirs we brought back with us from our trip to Spain. The trip was one giant adventure, but this little baby had us speaking with the Spanish police. It's a long story, but let's just say that we were incredibly thankful for a sweet shop lady who befriended us and bridged the language gap.

I'm thankful for this friendship. I just have to think....where would we be if we hadn't sat next to each other on that flight to Spain?

It takes a true friend to agree to head out with you on a cold winter day. Even more so if she's willing to hand over her warm coat and gloves for the sake of a photo. My friend Emily is seriously one of the sweetest women I know. This May (or sooner!), Emily and her husband Jason will become parents. She still has a few months to go, but since she's carrying TWO baby boys, Emily is already showing quite a bit. And she makes pregnancy look good.

Here are just a few of my favorites from the impromptu shoot we had together to capture one of the many snowfalls we've had this year. Makes me cold just looking at them. Emily, you're a pro!

Brooklyn | Spring Hill Children's Photographer

"B" came into my life this summer with her parents, Paul and Julie, in tow and I've been waiting such a long time to get her in front of my camera. She never fails to light up the room with her laughter and she's got the greatest hair that sticks up in just the right places to make her utterly adorable. And full of personality. There's no question that she's going to grow up to be a young woman that knows what she wants and works hard to achieve it. I also have a feeling that with parents like Paul and Julie, she'll also have a tender heart.

Brooklyn took her first steps just in time for her one-year photos. Such an independent little lady.

We were able to get these photos right before the family moved far, far away to a place I will not name, because if I say it, then it will be true, right? I can't help but be thankful that this family spent a few fleeting moments in my life, long enough to create a lasting friendship. I couldn't have asked for more.

I mean, really. Just look at that face. Is there anything more beautiful?

Paul and Julie, good luck on your new adventure. We miss you terribly, but we can't wait to see what's in store for you!

Growing up with an older brother always seemed pretty awesome. He always had the coolest LEGOs and, when he wasn't looking, his G.I. Joes made PERFECT dates for my Barbies. Hunky AND in uniform? Seriously. More importantly are the things one learns from having an older brother. Like the fact that Goonies never say, "die"; time travel is totally achievable, especially if one owns a DeLorean; a Magwai is the cutest pet ever....unless you happen to expose him to light, water or feed him after midnight; and Indiana Jones really did eat monkey brains. Ick. Sensing a theme here?

So here he is, all grown up and adult-like. Web site entrepreneur, writer and knowledgeable of all things technological. World-traveled, care-free and with an incredible sense of humor. And best of all...my big brother. I think that's cause for some new head shots, don't you?

Ever meet a teenager and think, wow, your mom did an incredible job raising you. You're an unbelievable kid? It happens to me all the time. A joyous hazard of working with teenagers. It's my hope that my kids are equally as wonderful when they're the same age. My friend Lisa has three great teens. And she's amazing at being their mom.

So in order to thank her, these three schemers and I got together for a top secret photo shoot right before Christmas. They were complete pros and I had a blast spending an afternoon with three of my favorite teens. Their mom was completely surprised. Mission accomplished. Yes, Mr. Bond, I do believe you've met your match.

Micah | Spring Hill Baby Photographer

I've been so looking forward to sharing this story ever since it began. I'm a sucker for adoption stories, in part because I'd love to adopt someday myself, but also because time and time again they're tales of God's faithfulness and fulfillment of His perfect plans. And it doesn't really get any better than that, does it?

Lynn and Chuck began taking the first steps in the adoption process in 2008 and eventually were approved for adopting a 4- to 12-year-old child. After well over a year of paperwork, parenting classes and a number of rejected inquiries, they weren't sure if they would ever bring a child home.

On May 18, they received a call from a friend asking if they would consider a baby. And once again, Lynn and Chuck took a giant step of faith. Micah Danielle was born on June 5, nearly two months early and before all the paperwork could be completed. But when God sets a plan in motion, everything works according to His purpose. Eventually all the necessary logistics were taken care of and this tiny little girl was home with her new parents. Parents who were reminded, once again, that when God thwarts our best-intended plans, it's because He's got something even more unbelievable in store. Like this redheaded, blue-eyed, adorable little baby:

This is a story of Micah's birth mother choosing for the baby growing inside her the chance to live. And of Chuck and Lynn's faithful obedience and their role in changing the course of a tiny baby's life. God has an incredible plan for sweet Micah. What an amazing story for this seriously blessed little girl.

The Allen Kids | Spring Hill Family Photographer

You might not believe me, but I'm not always a fan of surprises. Really, I'm not. It's because it's so darn hard to keep my mouth shut. Surprises are so much fun and exciting that I just want to share them with the world. And being patient is so hard. I'm partially glad Christmas is finally over, because now I can finally share these photos with the world.

Back in November, I was scheduled to shoot the Tankersley family for their Christmas photos. You can view that post here. Melissa called me and asked if I'd be interested in taking pictures of the Allen kids the same day as a Christmas surprise for their parents. Um, yeah. Didn't hesitate at all on that one. Christmas day has come and gone and Matt and Kim now have a gorgeous framed picture of their four children hanging on their wall.

Aren't these kids gorgeous?!? And they're so sweet too! They were such a joy to shoot.

Repeat clients are so much fun. Especially when we're talking little kids, because it's such a blessing to be able to watch how they grow.

You might remember Mikayla from last May. She was one of the first faces to ever star on this blog. She was also one of my first clients. You can see her photos here. Now at a year old, it's incredible to see how big she's gotten. And so much personality too!

We got these shots in November, but I've been waiting until after Christmas to post them since the photos were part of a Christmas gift. I've been dying to share.

Last time, we got tons of photos with Mikayla and Lindsay, so this time it was dad's turn. Wes really wanted photos taken with his motorcycle and I was more than happy to oblige. I think I got a little giddy when I saw it. BRIGHT GREEN?!?!? How could it be any more lovely? Seriously.

Happy belated birthday, sweet Mikayla! Can't wait to see what your second year of life brings!
